Reserve Warden For A Day


Hampton Nature Reserve.

Hampton Nature Reserve is a 300 acre site on the southern edge of Peterborough. It is legally protected as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Natura 2000 site, this is due to the presence of protected species such as the great crested newt & bearded stonewort. The reserve has over 300 ponds, woodland, scrub & open meadow habitats, all of which need maintaining & managed through the year. The Froglife conservation officer manages the reserve along with a group of volunteers who are a vital part of protecting this wildlife haven.

Winter. (November – February).

Scrub clearance, including making a bonfire to burn the material cut.

Collecting & moving materials for a hibernacula (reptile hibernation habitat).

Hibernacula creation, digging a small pit & filling it with cut branches, bricks & other material.

Checking & clearing paths on the nature reserve.

Bird surveys.

Building dead hedges.

Managing areas for reptile surveys.

Clearing reeds from ponds.

Spring. (March – June).

Surveys, including butterfly, reptile/amphibian, wild flower, birds.

Checking & clearing paths on the nature reserve.

Moving/replacing reptile survey mats.

General site maintenance.

Summer. (June – August).

Surveys, including butterfly, reptile/amphibian, wild flower, birds.

Checking & clearing paths on the nature reserve.

Moving/replacing reptile survey mats.

General site maintenance.

Autumn. (September – November).

When will my order arrive?

We process all the orders in the Froglife office as soon as possible. Please allow 14 days for delivery. We also advise on the last order date before Christmas to make sure that your gifts arrive in time.
